Ecological Surveys

At Chapel Tree Services we regularly work with our Ecologist to survey areas where tree work is required or where evidence of protected species have been found. We then work in close collaboration to apply for any relevant licences and develop a plan to reduce the impact of our work on the habitats of any protected species.

Ecological Advice

Advice from our Ecologist on what to look for if you suspect you have a protected species

Wildlife signs will be very varied depending on the habitat and species, however general signs of wildlife would be areas of flattened ground or compressed soil. 'Runs' are regular commuting corridors used by animals and look out for unexplained holes in the ground, woodwork and substantial vegetation.

You may see hairs on vegetation or along gaps in fences and come across latrines and droppings. For bats and birds, we would usually expect these to be on surfaces under beams or hanging areas and on external walls under windows or soffits.

Loose or raised tiles and any gaps can provide roosting and nesting opportunities and scratch marks on fences and trees will give you a clue to activity. Also, gnawed nuts or feeding remains will show the presence of some species. Most nocturnal animals become active just before dusk and dawn, so these are the best times to sit in the garden and watch out for wildlife.
